Rural Sports in Punjab - In villages which formed the first habitation of civilised man rural sports grew out of sheer necessity. The need for cultivating individual strength for labour on the fields, the interdependence within the community and need of defence, joint defence against onslaughts of a common foe and dangerous animals must have given birth to sports like wrestling, running, jumping, weightlifting and such performing arts as of measuring strength by holding wrists, twisting hands.

The Indian daispora
The Indian diaspora today constitutes an important, and in some respects unique, force in world culture. The origins of the modern Indian diaspora lie mainly in the subjugation of India by the British and its incorporation into the British empire.
Reflections on the Indian diaspora
President Shankar Dayal Sharma paid an official visit to the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago, and later in August the University of the West Indies at St. Augustine, Trinidad, hosted a major, nearly ten-days long, conference on the worldwide Indian Diaspora.
The Future of Indians in the Diaspora
Though Indians lived under conditions of appalling poverty in many places of the world where they were first taken as indentured labor, a number of remarkable transformations were effected over two or three generations.
Indian Culture and Its Transformations in Trinidad
When one thinks of the Indian presence in the Caribbean, a number of people at once come to mind. In the cricketing world, the names of Sonny Ramdhin, Alvin Kallicharan, and most of all Rohan Kanhai are not easily forgotten; in the political realm, there is Cheddi Jagan, President of Guyana, and Shridath Ramphal, who for many years was the Commonwealth Secretary-General.
A Political History of Asian Indians in the United States
The first significant presence of Indians in the United States can be traced to exactly one hundred years ago, when peasants from the province of Punjab began appearing on the west coast, seeking work in Washington’s lumber mills and California’s vast agricultural fields.
Overview of the South Asian Diaspora
Abolition of slavery in the European colonies of the Western hemisphere between 1834 and 1873 created the need for a new source of labor. In areas where land was scarce, such as the Caribbean Islands, newly freed slaves were forced back to work on the plantations. In areas where land was plentiful, such as Guyana, Surinam, and Trinidad, former slaves took up independent subsistence farming. The need for plantation workers was supplied in part by the system of indentured labor. Natives of India agreed to work for a fixed number of years in one of the colonies in exchange for a meager wage, plus room and board.
